Grindhouse Grappling System
“The environment stands as a testament to their commitment to inclusivity, ensuring that students from all walks of life not only learn but thrive.”
- Aaron Parham
Our grappling system is the next step in the evolution of grappling based martial arts. At Grindhouse, you’ll learn how Jiu Jitsu, Wrestling, and Judo work together in a system designed to build grappling skills instead of rely on memorization of techniques. We make classes accessible to every skill level and body type so that you can fully participate from day one.
Grappling Skill Development
Loved the communication! Made me feel very comfortable and less nervous. - Destini Miller
Science shows that people learn best when they are having fun, given increasingly challenging tasks, and allowed to experiment with movement. We understand that everyone learns at their own pace and that learning is a messy, non-linear process. Our grappling system is built with these ideas in mind.
Active Learning
In every class, you'll practice grappling techniques and movements. This helps you learn better by concentrating on effective movement instead of just memorizing “perfect” techniques.
Personalized Feedback
Friendly and approachable coaches give you the attention you need to fine-tune your techniques, correct any mistakes, and make adjustments that work specifically for your body type, physical limitations, and skill level.
Safe Training
We prioritize both physical and emotional safety at Grindhouse. Our top concern is the safety of our training partners, and we value our inclusive, supportive culture. We have a strict no-tolerance policy for aggressive behavior and harassment.
Uniform Requirements
Belt
Adults: No belt is worn in Nogi. Belt rank can be indicated by your rash guard (Google search for “ranked rash guard'') and some tournaments require that your rash guard display your rank.
Top - Females and Males
A shirt that covers your shoulders, armpits, and torso all the way to the waistband of your shorts or spats.
Grappling rash guards made of elastic material are recommended because they are made to fit tight, have some stretch, and can be tucked in. Baggy shirts, shirts that are too short to tuck in, and tank tops are not permitted. Long and short-sleeved tops are acceptable.
Bottom - Everyone
No pockets or have the pockets stitched completely shut.
No buttons, zippers or any kind of plastic or metal. Shorts made for grappling can be worn over the top of spats.
Gi pants are acceptable
Protective Gear
Mouthguards are required for students with braces on their teeth.
Soft headgear with no hard plastic is allowed.
Cups are prohibited.
Purchasing Uniforms
We suggest that you start with reasonably priced Nogi gear then buy more as desired. Sanabul and Elite sell good quality, ranked uniforms and you can find daily deals on all sorts of training gear at BJJHQ.com.
We sell Grindhouse Nogi gear for kids and adults. Please ask us about special orders if you don't see your size in the Grindhouse online store.
Bottom - Females
Squat-proof leggings (aka grappling spats). Shorts that do not expose your glutes.
Bottom - Males
Mid-thigh length shorts or longer.

What is NoGi Grappling?
Nogi grappling is a dynamic style of Jiu Jitsu that is practiced without the traditional Gi or kimono. It offers a distinct experience that sets it apart from training in the Kimono. Nogi is highly applicable to self-defense since most people aren’t walking around in Kimonos wearing Kimonos nowadays.
Uniforms are far less restricted, more economically priced, and easier to manage. You can wear something as simple as a Tshirt and athletic shorts without pockets to class.
Why Is The Grindhouse Training System Superior?
Nogi training complements other combat sports and martial arts. We emphasize and practice skill development in all aspects of grappling in every class. Many grappling schools only practice one aspect of the sport in isolated, decontextualized drills. We touch all aspects of the sport in each class in lively training that links the positions and movements together. This greatly speeds up the time it takes you to develop skills and “mat sense”.
What are the benefits of Grappling?
Grappling offers numerous benefits for adults, including improved physical fitness, strength, and flexibility, as well as enhanced coordination and balance. It also provides mental benefits like stress relief, increased focus, and boosted confidence, along with practical self-defense skills. Many people who grapple find a community of like-minded people and develop lifelong friendships.
Is Grappling safe for all fitness levels?
Grappling is a contact sport and you may experience bumps and bruises while you practice. Our philosophy is grounded in training longevity - learning how to move to create the safest training environment possible. Grindhouse teammates train with their partners’ safety in mind at all time.
Many people start training without having “perfect” fitness levels. The best way to get in shape for grappling is to come in and grapple. You’ll build stamina and strength over time and will be surprised at the physical transformation that occurs over time.
